Glas Receives Pro Bono Publico Award
May 19, 2009
New Orleans, LA
– The Louisiana State Bar Association, in conjunction with the Louisiana Supreme Court, has announced that John Jerry Glas is among this year’s recipients of the Pro Bono Publico Award.
In 2000, the Chair of the LSBA's Committee on Post-Conviction Representation asked Deutsch, Kerrigan & Stiles to provide pro bono representation for an inmate on Angola's death row. The firm volunteered, and the Louisiana Supreme Court officially appointed Jerry Glas on August 11, 2000. Over the next eight years, Jerry, Douglas R. Elliott, and other members of the firm investigated and litigated mitigating circumstances not presented during the trial. Based on what they uncovered, on October 2, 2008, the inmate was allowed to sign a "Contract For Life" with the consent of the State and the victim's brother. The court then vacated the death sentence, and sentenced the inmate to life imprisonment.
John Jerry Glas is a partner at the law firm of Deutsch, Kerrigan & Stiles. A significant portion of his insurance defense practice involves handling brain injury claims and defending product liability, police liability and premises liability lawsuits. He enjoys teaching Trial Advocacy as an adjunct professor at Loyola University Law School. Prior to joining Deutsch, Kerrigan & Stiles, he served as an Assistant District Attorney in Orleans Parish.
